M H Electronics manufactures a high stability crystal unit, the HS-4. This is a self contained
stabilized crystal which will provide stability of 2.5 PPM (.00025%) or better -30C to +60C with
no external compensation. The power requirement is 6-18 Vdc at 350 Ma on start up and
approximately 50 Ma after 2 minutes. Full warm up and stabilization takes approximately 3 to 5
minutes. The HS-4 is available in frequencies of 2.5 to 150 Mhz
The HS-4 is commonly used as a time base reference, or a channel crystal in a radio where
extreme temperature ranges and swings are a special concern. The HS-4 has excellent
performance for business or amateur repeaters.
Design tips for using the HS-4 are:
1. Power should be supplied to the unit continuously to eliminate warm up time.
2. Your power source should be before any fine regulation, not the oscillator power strip.
3. When used as a time base reference, place in close proximity to your semiconductor(s) to provide addition thermal stability.
4. When used in radio applications, disable the existing temperature compensation by
measuring the resistance of the thermistor (at ambient) used to control compensation and substitute a fixed of the same value resistor.
5. In circuits designed especially for use with the HS-4, make sure all fixed capacitors are NPO and variable capacitors are high quality. Dope (fix) all inductors with a glue/dope/paint to minimize the thermal coefficient. Place the HS-4 in close proximity to your semiconductor(s).
